Panama Banks Categories
Panama’s Banking Law classifies banks into three distinct categories:
- General License Bank
- International License Bank, and
- Representation Office License.
Additionally, there are two state-owned banks. Our comprehensive list furnishes detailed insights into the license type of each bank, facilitating a clear understanding of the range of banking services they offer.
State-Owned Banks
The two state-owned banks featured in our List of Banks in Panama are recognized for their stability and commendable ratings. These institutions are wholly owned by the Government of Panama and operate exclusively within the confines of Panamanian territory.
General License Banks
The General License Bank is the most commonly used license type among the banks in our list, with approximately 70% of them falling under this category. These banks are licensed to conduct business in both Panamanian territory and abroad.
International License Banks
Constituting a less frequent category, the International License Bank comprises approximately 20% of the listed banks. These institutions are exclusively licensed to conduct business overseas and are not permitted to operate within Panamanian territory.
Representation Office License
The Representation Office License is not an actual bank, but a license that allows an overseas licensed bank to establish a representation office in the Panama banking hub. These offices are not listed in our List of Banks in Panama, as we publish them separately.

Can i get a list of banks which opens account remotely my company is incorporated in UAE and Belize
Please note that regardless of where the company is incorporated, it is important to be aware that most banks require a physical branch visit to open an account. This is due to the local laws and regulations that mandate a KYC verification process for account opening. Therefore, it is unlikely that you will find a bank that allows remote account opening for your company.
Hello,
Could you please let me know if there is a bank that has affiliates in Dubai? I have a company in Dubai and Costa Rica and like to open a bank account in Panama.
Hello,
To our knowledge, there is currently no bank with affiliates in Dubai that allows you to open a bank account in Panama. However, there are alternative options available to you.
One option is to contact a local Panamanian law firm that specializes in assisting foreign companies with opening bank accounts. They can handle most of the paperwork and guide you through the process. It’s possible that at some point, you may need to make a brief visit to Panama to sign the necessary documents in person.
Alternatively, you can choose to handle the entire process on your own without the assistance of a law firm. However, this may require more time and effort on your part, as you will need to familiarize yourself with the legal requirements and procedures in Panama. Additionally, you may still need to make a few visits to Panama to complete the necessary steps.
It’s worth mentioning that opening a Panamanian company could be the most straightforward solution in your case. If your business activities are conducted outside of Panamanian territory and the income generated does not originate from Panama, it may not be subject to taxes in Panama. This option may offer additional benefits and flexibility for your company’s operations.
Good luck with your endeavor to open a bank account or establish a company in Panama!
Hiii dear
I want to open Bank account in Panama I am from Dubai United Arab Emirates kindly suggest which bank is best and can I open bank account remotely without physical presence.
Thank you
Unfortunately, we can’t recommend any particular bank as we must remain neutral and impartial about information related to Panamanian banks.
On the other hand, by law you can’t open an account remotely, banks in Panama are strict on this so they ask for a physical branch visit.
